В одной из версий англоязычных правил сказано:
1. Stretching the rope - Cards with colored strength numbers (red, blue, green):
On the playing board there are colored spaces assigned to the card colors on each side of the rope. The cards of one color are only allowed to be placed on spaces of the same color, therefore red cards on red spaces, etc. Cards already placed are simply covered up. That also applies to cards with white strength numbers. (Translator’s note: The rules don’t spell this out, but the intent of the designer is that both players may play cards to either side of the board.)
Т.е. карта может быть положена игроком на ЛЮБУЮ сторону поля, как свою, так и соперника... Или я что-то неверно понимаю?
Это, так сказать, расширенная версия правил...
Но даже если мы посмотрим на правила в первой редакции, то и из них напрашивается такой же вывод:

2. Robust ladies - Cards with white strength numbers:
These neutral cards may be placed on any of the six spaces and may cover any card, no matter if the card has a colored or white strength number.
Если "дамы"могут быть положены на ЛЮБОЕ из шести мест на поле, то почему же тогда "мужикам" отказывать в таком праве? Не логично! Поэтому полагаю, что карты выкладываются на любую из сторон.
Также и по механике игры... Наверное, играть интереснее, когда не просто тупо укрепляешь силы своей стороны самыми мощными картами, но и когда намеренно ослабляешь силы противника слабыми картами.
