The original cubes are 15x15mm.

I got a 14x14 wooden rod (pretty close) and cut it in 14mm cubes.

Then sanded and painted them. Pain in the ass, but the results are beautiful.

Awesome. Thinking about the same, although I want to make the card version which needs 9mm cubes. Thanks for the suggestion.

Well, I ended up with 8 mm square wooden beads from eBay. They come painted, so this is far the fastest and cheapest solution.
(I make the card version, so 8-9 mm cubes are ideal for that.)
